If you're a first time Mum, everything is brand new. Every little thing you experience with your baby will be the first time for you. So when your baby grows into a toddler, you're going to need some potty training tips!
Potty training puts a fear into many new Mothers. I can remember it being the one part that I was really dreading right from when my baby was first born! There seems to be a lot of pressure from older generations to get your baby out of diapers as soon as possible. I can remember my own Mum telling me that "You were dry by 10 months old!" My reply "Really?!...."
Don't fret! Your baby doesn't have to be dry by ten months old, in fact I would say that if your baby was dry before he reached his first birthday then you must be a miracle worker, and you should really be writing an article for this site!
Potty training isn't really hard, it just seems scary. One of the best potty training tips that I tell people, is don't start potty training until you and your child are both ready. Expecting your child to learn to go on the potty before he's ready will lead to frustration for both of you. And if your child is frustrated he may just switch off, and not want to learn... So give him time.
Potty Training Tips - Signs that show he may be ready!
There are certain things to look out for that can be little tell-tale signs that your baby is ready to start potty training. If you notice one or more of these signs, then your little guy or gal may be ready to ditch that diaper!
Does your child know when he has done something in his nappy. Does he cry, moan, or try and tell you that he is uncomfortable?
Does he know that he needs to use the potty? If he can say wee or poo before he does it (or give you any sign, verbally or physically) then he may be ready for potty training.
Is he interested in your toilet habits? Does he watch when you use the loo?
Leave a potty sitting in the room. Does he find it interesting?
If your child is displaying any of these signs, then you could give potty training a try. If he doesn't take to it... don't worry. Stop and try again in a few weeks time. There is no rush and it isn't a race, when you do start potty training your child, keep it relaxed and fun. Children learn much better when something is fun!
